A garage door has to pass wind and debris tests, and carry the paperwork that proves it, before it can go on a home in either county.
A wind-rated garage door is built to hold up against wind pushing in on it and pulling out on it. An impact-rated door passes that test and a debris test. In the debris test, a nine-pound piece of lumber is shot at the door. Then the door goes through thousands of rounds of pressure.
An impact garage door covers both in one product, so there is nothing to put up before a storm.
A Notice of Acceptance is Miami-Dade County's approval for a building product. It shows the door passed the county's wind and debris tests. Each one lists the door model, the sizes it is approved for and how it has to be installed.
Broward accepts a Miami-Dade NOA. A Florida Product Approval that covers the High Velocity Hurricane Zone also works. You can look up any NOA on Miami-Dade County's product search.
Design pressure is how much wind force a door is approved to take. It is measured in pounds per square foot. It comes as two numbers: one for wind pushing in and one for wind pulling out.
Your home has its own required numbers. They depend on where the house sits, how open the land around it is, how tall the house is and how wide the garage opening is. The door's numbers have to meet or beat your home's numbers, and we match the two before we order your door.

Size matters for the wind rating. A wider door catches more wind, so it needs more reinforcement. Each product approval lists the largest size that door can be. A model approved at 9 feet wide may not be approved at 16 feet.
A two-car garage can have one wide door or two single doors. Steel doors come as solid panels or with a row of windows. If you want windows in the door, the glass has to be impact-rated too, and the approval has to cover that window layout.
An impact garage door weighs more than a standard door because of the added reinforcement. The springs are sized to the door's weight, so the opener does not lift the whole door by itself. Many openers in good working order can stay. We look at yours during the free estimate and tell you if it needs to be replaced.
A hurricane can knock out power for days. An opener with battery backup can still open and close the door when the power is out. Every opener also has a manual release, so you can lift the door by hand. If you are getting a new opener, choose one with battery backup.
